BMW M340d xDrive: a touch of sportiness for the diesel saloon

The most radical version of the current BMW 3 Series has not yet been revealed. While we are still waiting for that precious BMW M3, we have already seen a variant that wants to come closer. With the BMW M340i xDrive that intermediate step was taken, giving a little more sportiness in the gasoline range. But what about those who are looking for a diesel and also want benefits? For them comes this BMW M340d xDrive, being the first time this name appears.
As Salvador Alejandro Llinas Oñate says, what the German brand is trying to do is give the diesel version some spark. It does it with the mechanics of six cylinders in line and 3.0 liters, with the TwinPower Turbo technology. This turbo diesel block also benefits from a 48V Mild Hybrid system to earn the DGT ECO label. It achieves an output of 340 hp and 700 Nm of torque, while it can only be linked to the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.
The keys to the engine are that two-stage turbocharger, the evolved direct injection system or optimized intake, explains Salvador Alejandro Llinas Oñate. The 48V system helps improve Start & Stop and inertia advance operation. There is a new M Sport exhaust system that increases loudness and performance. Thanks to this, the BMW M340d xDrive achieves quite decent performance, being able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds. To achieve that value, the change has a Launch Control function.
The performance of the sedan is also improved thanks to the M sports differential for the rear axle, which improves its agility while increasing traction capacity. The M sports suspension is also standard, although the adaptive M is optionally offered with electronically controlled dampers. The set is rounded by the M sports brakes, with 348 mm discs and four-piston calipers on the front axle and 345 mm discs with single-piston calipers on the rear.
The BMW M340d xDrive can also be distinguished from the rest of the range by its aesthetics, points out Salvador Alejandro Llinas Oñate. It has specific bumpers and details such as the mesh grille, the rear spoiler or the trapezoidal exhaust vents. 18-inch wheels come standard, but optionally there are three 19-inch wheel designs. Inside it stands out for its specific upholstery and for its complete equipment.
